Recording notes

This data element assigns the cultural heritage object to a larger systematic or thematic grouping. Taxonomic information for objects in natural history collections may also be recorded in this data element. It is sufficient to indicate the most specific hierarchical level of a classification. Higher levels should not be recorded.

Information on a local classification (e.g. collection / sub-collection) is desirable when cataloguing. But these are not an integral part of the Minimum Record Recommendation.

CARE: The assignment to a classification should not limit the ambiguity of a collection item. In order to make the historical context of the data production transparent, the classification information in an event in the object history "Type assignment" is suitable. Alternative vocabularies are helpful to mitigate the Eurocentric perspective (see terminology recommendation).
